  • Previous research has documented social contagion in obesity and related health behaviors, but less is known about the social processes underlying these patterns.
  • Focusing on married or cohabitating couples, we simultaneously explore three potential social mechanisms influencing obesity: normative body size, social control, and behavior modeling.
  • We analyze the association between partner characteristics and the obesity-related health behaviors of focal respondents, comparing the effects of partners' body type, partners' attempts to manage respondents' eating behaviors, and partners' own health behaviors on respondents' health behaviors (physical activity, fruit and vegetable consumption, and fast food consumption).
  • Data on 215 partners are extracted from a larger study of social mechanisms of obesity in family and community contexts conducted in 2011 in the United States.
  • These results are suggestive of a behavior modeling mechanism in obesity-related patterns of consumption and physical activity.

  • The prevalence of overweight and obesity was assessed using three standards - revised Indian Association of Pediatrics (IAP) 2015, WHO 2007, and International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) standards.
  • The prevalence of obesity was reported 14% by IAP standards, 11.1% by WHO standards, and 5.1% by IOTF standards.

  • [Title] Prevalence and geographic variation of abdominal obesity in 7- and 9-year-old children in Greece; World Health Organization Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative 2010.
  • BACKGROUND: In children, abdominal obesity is a better predictor of the presence of cardiovascular risk factors than body mass index (BMI)-defined obesity.
  • We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of abdominal obesity in the Greek pediatric population and to assess the impact of residence on the prevalence of both BMI-defined and abdominal obesity.
  • METHODS: In the context of the Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe, a national representative sample of 7.0-7.9 and 9.0-9.9-year-old children was evaluated (n = 2,531 and 2,700, respectively).
  • Overweight and obesity according to BMI were estimated using both the WHO and International Obesity Task Force cut-off points.
  • Abdominal obesity was defined as waist circumference/height ratio >0.5.
  • RESULTS: The prevalence of abdominal obesity did not differ between 7-year-old boys and girls (25.2 and 25.3%, respectively; p = NS).
  • Among 9-year-old children, abdominal obesity was more prevalent in boys than in girls (33.2 and 28.2%, respectively; p = 0.005).
  • Among normal weight and overweight children, the prevalence of abdominal obesity was 1.6-6.8 and 21.8-49.1%, respectively.
  • The prevalence of abdominal and BMI-defined obesity did not differ between children living in the mainland, in Crete and in other islands except in 7-year-old girls, where the prevalence of BMI-defined obesity was highest in those living in Crete, intermediate in those living in other islands and lowest in those living in the mainland.
  • In 9-year-old boys and in 7- and 9-year-old girls, the prevalence of abdominal obesity was highest in children living in Athens and lowest in children living in Thessaloniki, whereas children living in other cities and in villages showed intermediate rates.
  • The prevalence of abdominal obesity in 7-year-old boys and the prevalence of BMI-defined obesity did not differ between children living in cities and villages.
  • CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of pediatric abdominal obesity in Greece is among the highest worldwide.
  • Boys and children living in the capital are at higher risk for becoming obese.
  • Given that abdominal obesity is more prevalent than BMI-defined obesity and appears to be more sensitive in identifying cardiovascular risk, measurement of waist circumference might have to be incorporated in the screening for childhood obesity.

  • Exercise is a viable treatment option for deficits imposed by obesity and to combat immune dysfunction; however, the impact of exercise on the bone marrow niche is not well defined.
  • This review summarizes the available information on how obesity disrupts the normal bone marrow niche and HSPC function.
  • In addition, we review the limited data available detailing how exercise may be used to combat obesity induced bone marrow dysfunction, and discuss future directions for research in this field.

  • [Title] Perceived weight discrimination and chronic medical conditions in adults with overweight and obesity.
  • METHODS: The study included 21 357 overweight/obese adults (52.9% women) from the 2001 to 2002 and 2004 to 2005 National Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions.
  • Gender-stratified analyses revealed that perceived weight discrimination was associated with different medical conditions in women than men, and many associations became non-significant when adjusting for stressful life events, particularly for women.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Among overweight/obese adults, perceived weight discrimination is associated with significantly increased risk for obesity-related chronic medical conditions even after adjusting for BMI, physical activity and sociodemographic variables.
  • Such added health risk of overweight/obesity posed by perceived weight discrimination warrants public health and policy interventions against weight discrimination to reduce the socioeconomic burden of obesity.

  • OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity in French youth from 2009 to 2013 and to determine if there are differences in weight categories according to socio-economic status.
  • Underweight, overweight and obesity were defined according to age- and sex-specific BMI cut-off points from the International Obesity Task Force.
  • RESULTS: The prevalence of obesity was higher in boys than girls (P0·05) and remained unchanged in boys (7·1-7·3 %) between 2009 and 2013.
  • Overweight and obesity were higher in low socio-economic families (P<0·0001).
  • CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that the prevalence of overweight was stable although high in French children and adolescents, while the prevalence of obesity increased significantly.
  • Improving public health interventions, especially in high-risk low socio-economic populations, may help to modify the behaviour that contributes to underweight, overweight and obesity in young boys and girls.
