  • [Title] Arthritis and cognitive impairment in older adults.
  • Adults aged 65 or older with arthritis may be at increased risk for cognitive impairment [cognitive impairment but not dementia (CIND) or dementia].
  • Studies have found associations between arthritis and cognition impairments; however, none have examined whether persons with arthritis develop cognitive impairments at higher rates than those without arthritis.
  • Using data from the Health and Retirement Study, we estimated the prevalence of cognitive impairments in older adults with and without arthritis, and examined associations between arthritis status and cognitive impairments.
  • We calculated incidence density ratios (IDRs) using generalized estimating equations to estimate associations between arthritis and cognitive impairments adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, marital status, education, income, depression, obesity, smoking, the number of chronic conditions, physical activity, and birth cohort.
  • The prevalence of CIND and dementia did not significantly differ between those with and without arthritis (CIND: 20.8%, 95% CI 19.7-21.9 vs. 18.3%, 95% CI 16.8-19.8; dementia: 5.2% 95% CI 4.6-5.8 vs. 5.1% 95% CI 4.3-5.9).
  • After covariate control, older adults with arthritis did not differ significantly from those without arthritis for either cognitive outcome (CIND IDR: 1.6, 95% CI = 0.9-2.9; dementia IDR: 1.1, 95% CI = 0.4-3.3) and developed cognitive impairments at a similar rate to those without arthritis.
  • Older adults with arthritis were not significantly more at risk to develop cognitive impairments and developed cognitive impairments at a similar rate as older adults without arthritis over 6 years.

  • [Title] Suppression of GPI-induced arthritis by oral administration of transgenic rice seeds expressing altered peptide ligands.
  • OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects and mechanisms of transgenic rice seeds expressing the altered peptide ligand (APL) of human glucose-6-phosphate-isomerase (hGPI<sub>325-339</sub>) in mice model of GPI induced arthritis (GIA).
  • The severity of arthritis and titers of serum anti-GPI antibodies were evaluated.
  • RESULTS: Prophylactic treatment of GIA mice with APL12 transgenic rice seeds (APL12-TG) significantly improved the severity of arthritis, histopathological arthritis scores, and decreased titers of serum anti-GPI antibodies, BAFF mRNA in iLN cells, IL-17 production in splenocytes and iLN cells compared with non-transgenic rice-treated mice.

  • OBJECTIVES: Several studies showed the close relationship between Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and cerebro-cardiovascular events (CVEs) and subclinical atherosclerosis.
  • In this study, we investigated the occurrence of CVEs and subclinical atherosclerosis during the course of RA and we evaluated the possible role of both traditional cardiovascular (CV) and disease related risk factors to predict the occurrence of new CVEs and the onset of subclinical atherosclerosis.
  • Statistical analyses were performed to evaluate the role of traditional CV and disease-related risk factors to predict the occurrence of new CVEs and subclinical atherosclerosis.
  • The occurrence of both new CVEs and subclinical atherosclerosis in RA patients may be explained by inflammatory burden as well as traditional CV risk factors.

  • Acute septic arthritis is rare.
  • We report the case of a 61-year old patient with spontaneous Proteus mirabilis septic arthritis.
  • Patient's evolution was favorable thanks to early diagnosis and initiation of adequate antibiotic therapy.
  • Proteus mirabilis septic arthritis is rare.
  • On that basis we conducted a literature review of cases of Proteus mirabilis pyogenic arthritis to highlight the risk factors, pathogenesis, treatment and evolution of these diseases.
  • Diagnosis is commonly based on microbiological analysis, early articular puncture biopsy is performed before the initiation of antibiotic treatment, direct examination, culture and antibiogram which are useful as guidance for antibiotic therapy.
  • Septic arthritis is a diagnostic and therapeutic emergency; early management of this disease allows total healing without after-effects.

  • [Title] Pharmacological Basis for Use of <i>Selaginella moellendorffii</i> in Gouty Arthritis: Antihyperuricemic, Anti-Inflammatory, and Xanthine Oxidase Inhibition.
  • This study was aimed at evaluating the effects of <i>Selaginella moellendorffii</i> Hieron. (SM) on gouty arthritis and getting an insight of the possible mechanisms.
  • The paw oedema, the neutrophil accumulation, inflammatory mediators, lipid peroxidation, and histopathological changes of the joints were analyzed in gouty arthritis rat model, and the kidney injury and serum urate were detected in hyperuricemic mice.
  • The high dose of SM extract could significantly prevent the paw swelling, reduce gouty joint inflammatory features, reduce the release of IL-1<i>β</i> and TNF-<i>α</i>, lower malondialdehyde (MDA) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels, and increase superoxide dismutase (SOD) level (<i>P</i> < 0.01).

  • [Title] Arthritis models: usefulness and interpretation.
  • Animal models of arthritis are used to better understand pathophysiology of a disease or to seek potential therapeutic targets or strategies.
  • Focusing on models currently used for studying rheumatoid arthritis, we show here in which extent models were invaluable to enlighten different mechanisms such as the role of innate immunity, T and B cells, vessels, or microbiota.
  • The most popular models are the different types of collagen-induced arthritis and arthritis in KBN mice.
  • As spontaneous arthritides, human TNF-α transgenic mice are a reliable model.
  • Moreover, design of experiments should be of the highest level, animal models of arthritis being dedicated to exploration of well-based novelties, and never used for confirmation or replication of already proven concepts.
  • The best interpretations of data in animal models of arthritis suppose integrated research, including translational studies from animals to humans.

  • [Title] Treatment of rheumatoid arthritis with combination of methotrexate and Tripterygium wilfordii: A meta-analysis.
  • AIMS: Extracts of Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F (TwHF), a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, have been widely used for treating rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in combination with methotrexate (MTX) in China for several decades.
  • For efficacy, the addition of TwHF increased 50% responder rates (RR) (RR 1.337, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.188-1.505, P<0.001), and it reduced swollen and tender joint counts, shortened the duration of morning stiffness, decreased the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and decreased the level of C-reactive protein and rheumatoid factor.
